Septic System Maintenance
Septic System Maintenance - Avoid Problems
Septic system maintenance requires diligence to ensure optimal function, thus avoiding potential tank and field line problems down the road. Without proper septic system maintenance, the results can be messy, costly, and hazardous. Following a few, easily accomplished, maintenance guidelines will help to ensure your septic tank will continue to work at peak performance.
Because all waste water drains from the home into the tank, there will be a layering effect of waste within the tank. The heaviest waste, or solids, will sink to the bottom of the tank, forming a sludge-like layer, grease and fat float to the top, creating a scum layer, and the liquid, or sewage effluent layer, flows out of the tank and eventually into the soil where bacteria is either absorbed or filtered out.
It is vitally important to be sure everyone in your family understands how the septic tank works and what will happen if they don't follow some simple steps to keep it working as it should.
Septic System Maintenance - A few preventive measures:
* Do not flush feminine napkins or other solid products down the toilet or dispose of any solids down any drain
* Do not pour grease or cooking oil down the drain
* Limit the use of your garbage disposal by trying to throw leftover food and other solids in the trash rather than down the drain
* Do not pour household chemicals down the drain
* Immediately repair any plumbing leaks as the soil can become too saturated and lead to serious problems in the leach fields
* Be careful not to plant trees, such as willows, near leach field. Roots can interfere with their capability.
Divert water runoff
Be sure water from the roof, driveway, and other areas around the home is diverted away from the septic field area to prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged.
Get the tank pumped
Eventually, the septic tank will have to be pumped to remove the solid waste and scum layer that can cause problems in the leach fields. How often will depend on the size of your family and the average waste that will accumulate over time. For a small tank, you may have to pump it every two years, while a bigger tank may only require being pumped every four years or so.
For the homeowner, septic system maintenance is more a matter of common sense than actual hands on work. Information is king here. Use it and your septic system should run smoothly and problem-free for years to come.
